If it's grey and drizzly outside, it's tempting to keep your little one warm and dry indoors. We understand that. But a bit of weather is rarely a reason to stay in, and getting out in it does children a world of good. Here in Jersey, we're lucky to have beaches, woods and green spaces on our doorstep, and we make the most of them in every season.
Why daily fresh air does so much
Time outdoors is not just nice to have. It helps children in ways that are easy to overlook.
It gets their bodies moving, which supports strong muscles, balance and coordination.
A change of scene and some daylight can lift little moods, even on a grey day.
Fresh air and activity often mean a better appetite and easier sleep at night.
Open space gives children room to explore, take small risks and build confidence.
UK health guidance suggests that children under five who are walking should be active for around three hours spread across the day, and a lot of that can simply be playing outside. It needn't be organised or clever. Running, climbing and splashing all count. If you ever have questions about your child's growth or activity, your health visitor or GP is the best person to ask.
Wellies, waterproofs and a bit of mud
There's an old saying that there's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing. We rather agree. With a warm coat, wellies and a set of waterproofs, most days are fine for playing out.
Rain becomes an adventure when you let it. Puddles are for jumping in. Cold, crisp mornings are for spotting your own breath in the air. A muddy hand at the end of the morning usually means a happy, busy child who has been properly absorbed in something.
Getting messy is part of how children learn. So we send little ones home grubby sometimes, and we think that's a good sign.
Making the most of the island
Being a Jersey charity, we love that the island itself is part of the day. There's so much within reach, whatever the season.
A beach in winter, all wide skies and rock pools, is just as exciting as one in summer.
A woodland walk lets children notice the seasons changing, from bare branches to the first buds.
A green space nearby is enough for den building, leaf collecting or simply running about.
You don't need a grand plan or a long trip. The everyday outdoors, close to home, is where a lot of the magic happens.
Simple outdoor play at home
If you'd like to get out more as a family but aren't sure where to start, keep it gentle and low effort. A few ideas that work in any weather:
Go on a colour hunt, finding something red, something brown, something green.
Take a tub or a bucket and collect leaves, shells, conkers or pebbles.
Set up a little mud kitchen with old pots, a spoon and some water.
Splash through puddles together, then count how many you found.
Wrap up warm and look for the moon, or listen for birds, on a winter afternoon.
The aim isn't to fill the day. It's to give your child time, space and a grown-up who is happy to get a bit muddy too.
At Centrepoint, getting outdoors in every season is woven into how we care for children, because we're a charity focused on the best possible day for your child, not on chasing profit. If you'd like to see how that works day to day, do take a look at our nursery care.
