There is no shame in asking for help with childcare costs

If money is tight, you are not alone, and there are kind, practical ways to get a hand.

Money can feel like the quiet worry that sits behind everything else. You want the best days for your child, and you also have to make the numbers work at the end of the month. If the cost of childcare has kept you awake, please know this. You are not the only parent feeling it, and there is nothing to be ashamed of in asking for help.

Reaching out is not a sign that you have got something wrong. It is one of the most caring things you can do for your family.

Why money worries are so common

Raising children is wonderful, and it is also expensive. Hours change, work changes, and sometimes life throws something at you that no budget was ready for. A reduction in hours, a relationship breaking down, an unexpected bill. Any of these can turn a manageable month into a stressful one.

Most families need a hand at some point. The parents who ask early often find things are easier to sort out than they feared. The worry is usually heavier than the conversation itself.

Help that already exists in Jersey

Before you assume the worst, it is worth checking what support you may already be able to use. A few starting points.

  • The Nursery Education Fund (NEF) offers funded nursery hours for eligible children. The Government of Jersey website has the current details on who can apply and for how long.

  • Other funding schemes change from time to time, so it is always worth checking what is open to families right now.

  • If you receive Income Support, you may be able to get help towards childcare. The Government of Jersey can talk you through what is available.

Rules and amounts do change, so treat anything you read as a prompt to ask rather than the final word. A quick phone call can save a lot of guessing.

We are a charity, so helping comes first

This is where being a charity really matters. Centrepoint is not chasing profit. We are here to make childcare possible for every family in Jersey, and that includes families for whom the cost feels out of reach.

If money is the thing standing between your child and a warm, safe place to play and grow, please talk to us. We would far rather have an honest conversation early than see a family quietly struggle or feel they have to walk away.

Whatever you tell us stays private, and you will be met with kindness, not judgement.

How to start the conversation

You do not need to have it all worked out before you get in touch. You can simply say that money is tight and you would like to understand your options. From there, we can help you look at what might be possible.

If the worry feels bigger than childcare alone, your GP, health visitor or a local money advice service can also point you towards wider support. You do not have to carry it on your own.

If the cost of childcare is weighing on you, please take a look at our financial assistance page, or simply reach out. Asking for help is not a last resort. It is the first step, and we are glad to take it with you.
