Exploring Jersey with your children, whatever the weather

Some of the best days out on the island cost very little, and a bit of rain need not stop play.

Half terms and weekends can feel long when the budget is tight and the sky looks grey. The good news is that one of the best places to entertain children is right outside the front door. We're proud to be part of Jersey, and after more than 30 years of caring for island families we've learned that little ones rarely need much more than fresh air, a bit of space and a grown-up who is up for it.

Here are some free and low-cost ways to enjoy the island together, in every season.

Beaches in every season

Jersey's beaches are not just for summer. A wide, empty bay in autumn or winter can be more magical than a packed one in August.

Wrap everyone up warmly, in layers rather than one big coat, and head down for a blustery walk. Children warm up quickly once they're moving, so plan things to do rather than stand about.

  • Hunt for shells, sea glass and interesting stones

  • Draw giant pictures in the sand with a stick

  • Watch the waves and count them, or race them up the beach

  • Look in rock pools at low tide for crabs and tiny fish

Check the tide times before you set off, keep little ones in sight near the water, and pop a towel and a spare jumper in the bag.

Walks, woods and green lanes

A walk costs nothing, and Jersey is full of footpaths, headlands and quiet green lanes where children can roam a little. Walking in different weather is good for them. Splashing through puddles in wellies, feeling the wind, or crunching through fallen leaves all help children connect with the world around them.

The trick is to make the walk the adventure, not the distance. Give it a purpose. You could collect conkers and pine cones, look for birds, or set off on a colour hunt where everyone spots something red, then something yellow. A short walk packed with discoveries beats a long one with tired legs.

Parks and play on a rainy day

When the rain really sets in, an open park or playground still has plenty to offer between showers. Climbing, swinging and balancing all build strong bodies and confidence, and most parks are free to use.

If the weather wins, that's fine too. Some of the cosiest island days happen indoors with a blanket den, a pile of books and a warm drink. Children don't measure a good day by how much it cost.

Keeping it easy and cheap

Days out with children go more smoothly with a little planning, and they really don't need to cost much.

  • Pack snacks and a water bottle from home rather than buying out

  • Keep wellies, a spare set of clothes and a towel in the car

  • Build the day around free things, then add a small treat if you can

  • Lower the bar. An hour of proper outdoor play is a win, whatever the weather

Because we're a charity, we know how much family budgets matter, and we believe every child deserves time to play and explore the island they live on.
